Well, you can say that, but those aren't supposed to be the TOTAL solution. Along with those two, you should try doing the other off-page SEO techniques that have been mentioned in the other threads. Try looking them up using the forums' search function.

Blog commenting is good option, but don't only for the sake of getting links. If u really like the blog content useful in anyway, then you can make a comment

Both forum posting and blog commenting are good methods to imrpove SERP.But you should read the topics clearly and leave the quality comments. Thus, you will get helpful backlinks there.Even though some ones are nofollow baclinks,But they are still useful to get huge traffic to your site.

I dont really see the value in blog commenting, its not really a discussion and I dont see how one can get a good amount of link juice from it.. Now i know that some of you are going to say it worked for you, so please share an example of a comment you posted that got you link juice or helped you gain more authority.

Blog Commenting is as effective as it is (either do follow or no-follow) if you don't spam on blogs at all.
As we all know, blogs are not just created to put links and get backlinks. Blogs are created for contents and for readers to share factual information and knowledge as well as opinions.
When you comment on a blog, you have to really make sure you have read whole content of the blog and what it talks about. Blog can be a good way of interacting with other people who had read blog - either by opposing it or agreeing with the post.
So where is the benefit of it? Adding a link to your comment is actually just an EXTRA benefit. The real benefits of commenting to a blog that you have read is that:
1. You gain knowledge or probably corrected the blog posts
2. Your comment is actually considered as a content, and if you post a quality comment, more likely you are also posting a quality content.
3. You have a higher chance to let your link stay there and provide a strong backlink for your website, especially when you are trying to link on a .edu or .gov site.
4. You can avoid being seen as just a spammer on the blog.
5. As you gain other people commenting on the blog, the chance of them visiting your website, and then probably sharing it to other people that they know could be another benefit of what you can get from it (which is traffic)
Of course, you only comment on blogs that are related to your portal, and with at least a high PR - does not necessarily also that it should be a do-follow at all.

See this is all relevant to link building in general is it not?
Find a relevant source with high PR and do whatever to get a link, the only difference is most other links get clicked on. Most blog comments look like spam for a link, and I dont think your comment gets clicked on enough for it to be worth it. I see it all the time people put a comment like Great Post! and then leave a link that I wont ever click on.

Indeed mate. That's one of the methods that I'm still using. You can even get more backlinks or high traffic percentage from a single dofollow blog. Search blogs that are powered by commentluv and as much as possible go for moderated blogs than auto approve.

Hi, both blog comments and forums are effective. As said above you should also start off page SEO submissions to get good rank in various search engines. "Do-Follow" blog comments are good to get rank and if you want only traffic then "No Follow" links are also good enough. Except this, you can do article submissions, social bookmarks, directories submissions, press release. Guest Post is also another good option.

There is not any technique that can assure your rank on top in google search page yet you can use techniques like blog commenting , forum posting, Blog writing, and others. They surely increase your ranking on google. But your website content is the most important factor for google to rank you better.

Blog commenting is effective only when the respective blogs allow do-follow backlinks. And with nofollow links we may only get referral traffic (if our comment is being visible in the top and attract the readers of the blog) but not any PR juice.

Search for "CommentLuv" and "KeywordLuv" when blogging. This will give you good backlinks to your site. Try typing:
site:.com inurl:blog "post a comment" -"keywordluv" -"you must be logged in" your keyword

You can't be sure in seo which activity will work hundred percent. It is advised to do all activities which are prevalent in seo. There are many methods to boost your website in search result. And definitely blog commenting is one of them, and it is very very helpful when you post comment genuinely. Spamming will be harmful.

For those who keep telling that you can only gain benefit from a do-follow blog or by blog commenting on do-follow, or those who cannot see the value on commenting on blog, etc. , I quote from this thread by mjtaylor:

You’ll gain traffic and possibly more links.

PS.
I can't post the link for the thread yet since I am not yet allowed, but it is located on the SEO forum, second STICKY thread started by mjtaylor.

I wouldn't worry about do-follows or high PRs if I'm using blog commenting as a way to interact with other people. It's a lot more genuine if you're going to think of how you will actually communicate with people rather than thinking of how you're going to get that backlink.

This is a question I always ask myself.
In my case, I am not concerned with just getting traffic to my site, instead, I'm looking for do-follow links, which will then increase my Trust Rank and help drive targeted traffic to my site, which focuses strictly on a local service as a wedding photographer.
To spend time on no-follow links, to me, would be a waste of time.
Thoughts....?
Do you think this is a bad tactic for me trying to get targeted, area specific traffic?

Why would it be a waste of time? What if a certain website that is so popular and many uses it, but then it is no-follow - would be just a waste of time since it is a no-follow?
Both do-follow and no-follow contributes to the whole visibility and performance of a website. Do-follow maybe the dominant among the two, BUT maintaining a balance rhythm of links from the two is way better than just being obsessed with DO-FOLLOW links.
Yes - we may not be getting back links from no-follow, but is it just about LINKS? Of course not. We all know that and we should - with the fact that Google algo has 200 or more signals/factors on ranking a website. That will make sense.
