As it has been said in many answers, short urls were created for shortening, not for SEO purposes. If you post a link using a short url, you are passing PR first to that domain, then a small piece goes to you (if they use 301 redirect). So you are better off them if your goal is to rank.

Twitter for example, needs short urls just because they allow 140 chars tweets. Long time ago twitter changed all urls to their own short "t.co" avoiding any kind of PR flow.

shorten urls mainly helpful when we are doing micro blogging, on micro blogging there are limitation of text length, so we can use shorten url here.

twitter.com good example for that

Did y'all watch the video of Matt's response (posted in this thread) to a question about these types of links?

I use short URLs for my social shares, becaus I'm making campaign URLs for analytics, so I use Google URL shortener for just making it short. For the ranking it don't have any meaning

It won't help at all. You need to use your actual domain, and that domain needs to contain your keywords. If it doesn't, you will have to collect a lot more high quality backlinks in order to rank.

I don't think so. However, the URL's with the words (either with the keywords or the page title in the url) may helpful in the organic search results. For example, a blog post url (blogger blog) will be showing the title of the posting in it, this will be helpful in URL relevancy. But, it doesn't give a big effect in SEO according to my trials/experience.

I think shorter urls will only harm your SEO. If instead you use url: domainname/your-article-keyword it will help SEs to find relevant content easier based on keyword in your url.

Short url is not appreciated in seo. The domain name clear and keyword used in it is not only search engine friendly, but also user friendly.

I watched this video. I had no idea that some URL shorteners will permanently 301 every link, pretty cool. However, from my understanding a 301 does not always pass all the link juice. In which case, it be better to build links using the complete domain. Unless using twitter and you cant fit the URL into your post.

There has been some speculation about this. According to Matt Cutts as far as we use a standard link shortner that uses 301 redirect there will be no negative impact on the pagerank as the link juice will be passed on. But now, there is another question that rises up as the social media web pages where the links are no-follow, do not pass pagerank even if you are using a standard url shortener with a proper 301. So here as I suppose the question trims down to the amount of the traffic driven to the link. It will be better to have a clearer and more perfect understanding about this.

If you really want to use short urls just make your own url shrinking site where you can do custom/short urls this way you are doing seo for your short url website, if you use other websites like bit & tiny you are doing seo for them.

The best thing you can do is just carry on using your own website url and wait untill you get a good amount of stats, and see for yourself if it has worked or not. I would imagine that google does look at your social engagement and if your figures are good they would reward you one way or another.

I think they do help especially if they are do follow. But again not as much as full urls where you can specify the keyword.

Short URL can not help you to optimize your URL always make Long URL short, for better rankings , you should try to use your keywords instead of short URL or your domain.

This may have been stated (I haven't checked every post on this thread), but I have heard that short URL's are helpful for SEO. AND, if you clarify the URL, your SEO will be better affected. Personally, I haven't experienced this, but I have read it a few times (I believe someone on here mentioned clear URL links are better for SEO).
