Short Urls will NOT help you in your ranking. You'd better use your own domain name and build backlinks to it ... Just a simple reason: "What if this "short url" got deleted?" // You will lose ALL your potentional visitors

yar , I think so . short urls are no use for ranking. and you should unified use only one domain name so that the ranking will be concentrated.

Well depending on where you promote your link it might not matter. Places like twitter is mainly were short urls should be used.

Short URLS won't make a difference with organic search engine rankings. Exact match domains do help though.
The only use for shorter URLS wouldbe for creating a memorable website. And maybe for affiliate marketing or something, so people can easily remember the website and type it in and it's a bit easier to copy paste that way.

It depends on which url shortener you use. Some, like bit.ly, use a 301 permanent redirect in the background.
patco did have a point though. Some day your chosen url shortener could cease to exist.
You may find this video done by Matt Cutts (Google Spam Dept) helpful:

short urls normally use a 301 redirect to go to the true destination. This means any links via the short url will not quite give you the full PageRank credit that a direct link will give you.
I'd suggest you avoid short urls for your own link building and leave their use for offline marketing, social media linking and the odd case where you want to shrink down tracking or affiliate parameters.

Having a short URL is great. But, if you are making niche sites and planning on using organic search engine traffic as your main source of attracting visitors than you'd be better off with an EMD.

I fully agree with Tiggerito in this case. If you have ever redirected a domain you likely noticed that the new site did not pick up where the old one left on in terms of PR and occasionally in the SERPS.

No , Short URL's are of no use for rankings, they are just for making Long URL short, for better rankings , you should try to use your keywords instead of short URL or your domain if keyword is not possible to use.
Your Link juice value would be divided if we will use short URL , because they would be treated as referral URL.

Rajnish357,
Would you explain how shorten url better for user & search engine?
Do you feel that user easily remember bit.ly/3ey7 than xyz.com/web-design?
and how for search engine?
