NoFollow Links
I have been hearing that nofollow links are just as important as dofollow backlinks. I know that no one knows the ratio that one would need to have between nofollow vs dofollow, but how does Google score this when it comes time to rank your site? Are you penalized by not having any nofollow links to your site (if you don't have any)? Should a person try to get as many nofollow links to their site? I have been hearing this both ways, and I wondered what you guys thought.

It is depend on the domain authority. FB and twitter are no follow but they pass more traffic than others does. The link weight hierarchy as below:
1. Do follow from authority domain
2. No follow from authority domain
3. Do follow from non authority site
4. No follow from non authority site

No one knows how the links are scored by Google...although some have a theory or guess.....
Factually...Google likes a mix of natural links.....some of both follows....
You can play the link chasing game or you can build a site that has something to offer your visitors....working to gain some backlinks...
Your site can become popular and be in a position to make money....
Your choice.... )))))

Seems to be about the best answer. Sure, you can go to the advanced search function in here and search the google section, seo section, etc for the ones with "follow" in the title and you'll have access to hundreds of opinions. Who the hell knows which are on the mark.

Yeah, it is just a vague idea people do have about this and with a theory to support their thought, think it to be the way that it is followed. At most of the places that I have seen and read have said that a mixture of dofollow and nofollow links work the best.

nofollow link will not give you backlinks... But these backlink can generate referral traffic for your website.
As far as their indexing is concerned, Google does not index nofollow links but if other links on those web pages are dofollow your backlinks will get crawled.
Moreover, search engine crawlers follow nofollow backlinks for discovering good content.

It google that count only dofollow link as your backlink but other search engine can't do this, and nofollow backlink also useful for traffic because simply to gain. So try for both.

If you could get a link from say CNN or BBC news, would you care if it was nofollow? No, I wouldn't either.

I have been playing the link chasing game, where I frantically build links to my site, but I am afraid that I have built too many DoFollow and not enough NoFollow. Just wondering if that will hurt me in the long run?

If what Google expects to see from a site is a natural linking profile, then it stands to reason that there should be a balance between "dofollow" and nofollow links. Chasing dofollow will upset that balance. Whether or not that would hurt would depend on how great that imbalance is, and whether Google actually notices it.

Nofollow links count in the eyes of google but to what % no one can really tell. Be as natural as you can be. Get some dofollow links and some nofollow links, if you're going after the links or try to make your website of high quality which will bring links automatically.

No one know the ratio of no follow and do follow that is best for your website or how much weight they are given by google. Only google itself knows this
You should try to make your backlinks look as natural as possible that means making a random mix of dofolow and no follow. The more natural it looks the better. If its looks blaringly obvious that you created all the links your self google will probably sandbox you. or you may receive the dreaded "unnatural links detected " in your webmaster toolbar for google webmaster tools

Here is a thread where a discussion about do-follow and no-follow is being brought about (though in a blog commenting perspective) I had linked you to my previous answer. Hope it helps you.

That is surely a contradiction? How can they be of no value for SEO purposes if they help make a link profile appear more natural? SEO isn't only about the link juice gained.

By the way, once I fed up with this discussion many time, argument its importance and uselessness. So I decided to leave the topic. Now I don't see any do follow or no follow blog, and comment on them in royal way

I'll just change some of the words from luring's reply here. I agree with the reply; it's just that the ones that have the nofollow attribute are the links, not the blogs.
Anyway, I usually ignore that attribute because no matter what attribute you put in a link, it's still a link, and it can still bring traffic to a site. That's what matters. Well, if you're selling something, conversions matter the most, but you get my drift.

As of now, I am commenting on blogs, not really checking to see if they are dofollow or nofollow. Trying to get a natural look to the links to my site.

We should not be too concerned about NOFOLLOW OR DOFOLLOW because either NO or DO, it will bring you a 1 BACKLINK!

No-Follow links can also help you to get a better ranking, they won't help you increase your PR. If you could find no-follow links from HIGH authority domains, they would be really worth

No-follow links are also important as do-follow, by using no-follow you can get targeted traffic and they also help you in SERPs, but not in PR.
