How to choose a reputable SEO

Hi gang,

I'm a new member here and I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on choosing a reputable SEO firm. I've gone to the advertisers forum, but I really have no way of evaluating them. I'm an owner of a small insurance company and we would like to create a website and start a PPC campaign. We have a set budget to spend monthly and we are looking for a reputable SEO firm with references and results. I've heard of a company this morning called Jumpfly and was wondering if anyone has any opinion on them. If anyone can give me any referrals, I would really appreciate it. I think this forum is awesome and I've learned quite a bit since I've been coming here. Thanks,

Reputable SEO. That's like "honest crook".

But seriously, very few effective and qualified SEO's out there. What's your budget? I might be able to recommend a few if I know that.

If your looking for long term results, you should think about learning first the basics of search engine optimisation, then increasing this knowledge by using forums like this.

If your looking for short term results, i.e. you want to get traffic to the website quickly, then I'd suggest Google Adwords, or Yahoo's Overture equivilent.

It will be great to have at least basic understanding on how search engines work so that when you talk to prospect SEOs you can tell which of them are doing the right thing, those who know the right thing but will do the unethical one and who are those who do not know what they are talking about.

Thanks for your responses. I do have a fair amount of self educated knowledge on PPC campaigns (Adwords, Overture) as well as SEO startegies. I don't have any problem conversing with a SEO company and keeping them honest. I'm just wondering if anyone can give me a good referral, based on their own experience industry connections.
