Site Title, How Long Is Too Long?
Many people know that having a good site title is important to search engines. How long is too long for a site title to be? I have a site but it's site title on the homepage gets repeated so that it is very long. Do you have a long site title and how do you know if a title is too long and will have a negative impact in search engine rankings?

Actually Google use 60-65 characters in search snippet so use your primary keywords within these characters so that you can get better ranking and generate traffic when website shows in search snippet.

Beyond the SEO aspect of title tag length, you need to consider people bookmarking your site in the Favorites (Bookmarks) and how your title will appear on social networking sites. After all, the point of creating a good title is to get people to visit your site.
Quote:
You want your whole title to show when someone bookmarks your page in their browser Favorites, visits your site, bookmarks your page on social bookmarking sites and when the search engines show your page in the search results, don’t you? Well there is a limit to the number of characters your title tag can be to accommodate all these different senarios.
The W3C (World Wide Consortium) which develops the standards for the web recommends you keep your title tag contents to 64 characters so the title will be displayed in browser Favorites and the top browser bar.

Title Tags and Search Engine Optimization
What is in the title of your search result will depend on what the person searched for. It will not necessarily be what you have in your title tag. Explained and demonstrated in the article referenced above.

I'd suggest making them short sweet and to the point.

Title doesn't have to be very short or extremely long. You can write 6-10 words title and that should do the trick.
With a interesting title, you will have a good idea on the length of the title.

You can write title with specific keyword, and if possible, use this title for micro niche keyword and huge monthly searching on the Net. But ideal title not over from 60 character.

you can make title 60-65 character with space. if you make too long title then goole cache left to right after 60 character all the word left then you can not get benefit. i thinks you create title all the important keyword include in 60 to 65 character then you can get benefit

Google can display up to 66 chars (or roughly count in search results to make sure), so put the important keywords in the beginning. It can be long for other search engines.

Anything more than 65 letters in title is very long for search and not seo friendly so try to keep it between that..!

According to this article at SEOMoz, 70 characters is considered Best Practices. What this means is that 70 characters or less in the Title Tag is a guideline and not an SEO rule.
In addition, Google will still index titles over 70 characters long, but they are truncated when displayed in the Search Engine Results Pages.

Note that the Penguin update is targeting keyword stuffing. Make sure in any long title you are avoiding excessive keyword usage.

Title should be for people to understand.....stuffing with keywords is no good for anyone....
Title alone will not make or break a site..
The right number and a high ranking "title" does not a great site make....
Consider...."free beer tomorrow"....may attract a lot of attention, BUT...does not result in conversions...

50 characters are great according to me. Try to place your main keyword in the very beginning of the title and keep it short. Try to optimize BOTH for search engines and visitors

Don't know answer but it seems like first three words in my titles carry the most punch. What do others of you think?
