All this talk about increasing readership only works if your target audience "gets" what a RSS feed is. The "get" part would depend on their internet skills. A RSS feed does make it easier for one to keep up to date with their favourite sites if they use a RSS feed reader.
The trick to get your readership up via RSS feed would be to have attention getting article/page titles and blurbs in the feed so they will actually go to the site to read the full article and possibly take an interest in the other new stuff you have on the site. e.g. if you change your sidebar frequently with specials or something like that.
For SEO if your RSS feed is submitting to RSS pinging services then your link gets around thus creates more opportunities for people to see the new article(s). However, if you are going to do the ping service thing you have to be careful when using more than one service. If you duplicate which RSS feed directories are pinged it could do more damage than good as the directory could ban you for spamming.
