Meta tags are important because it is the part of the the website that the search bots read on your website even before SEO existed.

Agree 100% with JohnnyS, developing quality content is the best thing I have done. Key word density, h1 tags, meta tags, meta descriptions, backlinks, alt tags on images, etc. etc. are all supporting roles in the theater. The star is quality content that people want and need.

Unique Content.
Unique content is not content that is rewritten. It is usually something about the industry that is extremely interesting and no one else is talking about or a video that no one ever thought of.... For SEO "creativity" is Key.

Ditto.
Adding a blog to my site was the best thing I could have done in addition to Kayak's list. It ensures fresh content and keeps my visitors coming back. (Also great for all the usual SEO reasons)

For me catering to people on a personal level is a powerful method and this is why some have mastered facebook and similar, while others have barely scratched the surface. Also being polite to everyone when it comes to business is key, never be rude regardless of how difficult the individual may be via email or what have you.

This is great, but has NOTHING to do with SEO.

It has everything to do with SEO...SEO is heading in 1 direction, social. And the best thing you can do for your SEO compaign is build relations with your users so that they do what? like your site on facebook, tweet your site, and share it via other means etc...Google pays attention to this kind of stuff already and can easily help rank your site not to mention help it avoid getting slapped(as a number of front page sites are manually reviewed by Google staff). And when google starts making Google+ stuff direct effect site rankings(which I imagine will be this year or next) you better have a Google+ account or be left in the dust.

I dont believe this is all true. If Google looked at social mentions, whats to stop users from using a service like fiverr ( http://fiverr.com/categories/social-...latest/pages/1) to get a ton of social mentions?
Before you say that these users are not relavent to my niche. Think about all the boring niches that are too boring to have social interaction.
I have a construction site that I have worked on for a few years now, ranking for top level national keywords. I have 1000 followers on Facebook, I got them using a FB ad, targeting people who can relate. These users all liked us naturally. However, none of them interact with our content because it is plain old boring.
Now lets say one of my competitor did use Fiverr, lets say they invested 100 dollars in fiver for social mentions likes and other stuff.. Dont you think that will look like spam to Google? I dont see social mentions being a big ranking factor.

I'm not sure I agree completely.
Meta tags have a low impact and then only if the meta tags you use on any particular page reflect the keywords on that particular page.
The meta description carries more weight (from a search engine perspective), as long as it contains the primary keyword of that particular page. The meta description for each page should be unique. From a human perspective it must be written well, and in very few words motivate the human to click!
Hey, I might be wrong, but that is what I found over time What is the opinion of other SEO-ers out there?

I like the fact that you said "I might be wrong" and you did not just assume. Also I like the fact the you asked for more opinions
Meta description is not looked at from Googles search engine perspective at all. Only human perspective.
Google looks for your keywords here: url/title/h1/body/navigation
Dont just place the exact keyword you are trying to rank for here: url/title/h1/body/navigation
Be diverse make sense and write for a human/link for a human/rank for a human. Now go get em' tiger!
