If you select high competitive keywords then you need to put more efforts to bring up in the top of SERP results and also it takes long time. If you are targeting low competitive keywords, then you can bring up your website in top of the results in a shorter time..

It depends on the query of your keywords. What is the esence of low competition if the number of hits ar very low also. Even if it was high competition but the traffics are very high. You need to choose the high in traffics keywords even if it was high in competition. Maybe you can mix those high and low competition but it depends on the number of traffic.

The keywords that you choose must relate to your products you are trying to sell to the general public or your target market.
So you want to sell baby diapers? keyword could be "diapers" lol and obviously. that is most definitely a highly competitive keyword.

Keywords is the subject of a Web site, it is recommended that you use the MNS or MS to choose, maybe GOOGLE ADWORDS can be, but it is not very detailed, so you need to use some of the charges, was the most important. selection of keywords should be used with caution, choice, cannot be changed in the future.

This may sound crazy, but an uncommon strategy that works is to forget keywords altogether. Build high quality unique content about your products and/or services and chances are those content will have keywords beneficial to your business without you even trying.

You need keywords which are easy to rank but at the same time those keywords have some traffic. Thats how it works. so it will be easier for you to rank and get some visitors.

See this all depends on you and your goal, If you really want to increase your website traffic then don't look at competition, with your knowledge and your effort you can beat competition. but law competitive keyword have less searches then it will not help your business.
Cheers

This was mentioned already. Got any other suggestions?
In fact, could you answer the OP's question?

Select your keywords according to business relevancy. You do not think about high monthly search or competition. select your keywords and work on them. Thanks

This was already mentioned and does not really help the OP as they asked how to and not where to

I think its better to look at those monthly searches and competition. IMHO. It helps you to know whether or not using that keyword would be viable or not, and especially if that keyword is in a niche that has you in direct competition with big names on the web. It shows you how easy/hard you are going to have to work to get yours site to the top.
It all depends on your niche and what I generally look for is how many global searches it gets and then look at the competition. Sometimes I am lucky enough to find a keyword that is searched for a million times or more a month, but has very little competition, so its added to my list. I also look at medium competition and high competition, exact match, phrase match and related keywords. Sometimes related keywords/phrases can also be helpful. They need to be relevant to your business.

This has been said many times, yet it still doesn't help the OP with his question.
