I absolutely agree. I try to always create content with the user in mind and then at the end make a few small tweaks for SEO (only tweaks that don't change the original flow of the content.)

I couldn't agree more. Always write your copy for your visitors first. I'd much rather have a page that converts well than one that gets a ton of traffic that leaves right away.

It has been (insert months here) since my last confession...(grin)

By only focussing on a few keywords to copywrite per page, writing that accomplishes that is designed to convert and also happens to feed spiders is possible.

The times that I try and make a page do too much (target too many words / phrases...) is when i find myself in the quicksand there...

There's a reason why greed is one of the 7 deadly ones...

It is a good point and a good article.
