If you are certain that it is the back-links, then, yes, you can manually contact the webmasters of those sites you are got links from, although, as you know this will be tedious job if you have lots of spam links pointing to your website.
So friendly advise is that you weigh up the benefits, and take it from there. I don't think there is a program which can do that, you have to do it manually.
Another option which should be considered are:
1= by the nature of the question put forth, you need to get extra familiar with google guidelines so that similar issues do not happen to your website in the future.
2= perhaps you can start over again (new domain, new strategy) and focus the time and energy which otherwise would take you to get rid of all the spam back-links
I hope this reply points you in the right direction

You can check manually your back links and then remove them. But you can't able to remove all back links, you can only remove back-links where you can find delete or edit options.

First it is better for you to make whether your website dropping is caused by the back links. If so, then you can email the admin to help you remove the links.

Nice Sharing...
Creating Backlinks too quickly and adding too many links from poor quality, unrelated sites will actually reduce your page ranking since purchased links are getting negative attention from the search engines.

Do as deryaSavas has described and if you found few links that you can't control report them to Google by reconsidering request.
Just collect those links which you haven't created and send it to Google and let google decide what they will do with this

It also happened to one of my boss site.
We do bad-backlinks removal manually without any tool.
We remove the links (built in the past) when it's possible and have the control of. Also send many emails to the webmasters asking to remove that backlinks.
The other one is hire a legal lawyers to handle (ask and removing) spam links that sent by out competitors.

Also depends on whwre exactly those links are pointing to. For example, if they are pointing to www.domainname.com/blue-widgets.htm/ and you know that this page is causing a lot of problems due ot the links pointing to it, then just rename the page.
All the links pointing to this page are now pointing to nothing, a black hole if you will.
If you do a reconsideration request to Google, be 100% honest to them, tell them what you did wrong, apologies and tell them what you are doing to try to change this. You need to gain their trust and chances are they know what you have done already and if you try to pull the wol over their eyes and say "somebody else did this to our site", they probably will not help your site as they have heard every excuse under the sun.
If the bad links point directly to your main page ( www.domainname.com/) then it gets a little more difficult and the only proper thing to do would be to use some software that points out the bad links to you, try to email all the webmasters where the bad links are, and then let google know what you have done about it and send them a list of the links also.
This sort of software isn't free to use, but hey, if your business is on the brink of dying then it's got to be worth it.
One more thing, before contacting them, create a google analytics on your site and fix any other issues they may find first otherwise they won't take you seriously as they can see you haven't tried very much before contacting them and won't like it.
Just my 2cents.

Hi,
You said you cant take links from some sites. In that case the only thing you can do is you need to request to the administrator of that site and request him to remove your link. And after that you can do is you can wait for his response

Did you read my post that is directly above yours?
They can do a lot more than request a link removal and await the webmasters response.

I have hundreds of incoming links to one of my sites from spammy crap websites with no real content on them.
I have often wondered if this may the reason Google tanked my site in the rankings a few years ago and still refuses to rank it high.
In 2008 I got well over 1,000 visitors a day from Google (I don't remember the exact figure). It dropped dramatically in 2008 to I think around 200. I get about 25 visitors a day from Big G now. And I have more spammy incoming links than ever.
I wish there was a way we could disassociate ourselves with incoming links in Webmaster Tools.

You have to do it manually. If someone did the SEO for you, ask the login credentials of the blogs, forums, or social bookmarking sites where your SEO incharged posted your anchored keys.

There are certain tools available like SEOMoz Open Site Explorer, ahrefs Site Explorer and Majestic site Explorer the good back link detecting tools which provide you your website backlink and the anchor text distribution. You can check your data variation and will easily help you to get attention of your all the backlinks. Also you can remove it through manually.

requesting for link removal is your way to go, it would take time or you can just revamp your campaign by doing a much better link strategy

Most of the links are not removable, like directory submission, blog comment, social bookmarking etc...
But if it is compulsory to remove links for you than you need to contact the admin of that particular website and request him for remove links. This is quit time consuming process because this is all depend on admin.

Hi all,
There are many ways to remove bad links.
1. You have to check your back link with the use of a webmaster tool.
2. Need to check anchors's text properly.
3. You Have to check pages your links are on.
4. Find contact detail of sites providing a bad back link
5. You have to email that person and ask for your link to be removed.
6. Maintain a spreadsheet of all sites.
Hope this will helps you.
Thanks,
Anna Smith
