Now with Google algorithm updates, there are not many great and easy ways.
I use wordpress.com for creating external blog that I am in full control. Once it become well indexed I can place the links I need.

i generally prefer directory submission, sbm and forum posting for link building.

I believe that links you're earned with that techniques are not valuable enough.
Even you'll get banned from Wordpress.com as often happened.

Try to get more qualified backlinks with link-worthy content (I mean something like create great content and get the backlinks without asking)

Sound hard indeed. Otherwise, you can apply social media share (without spamming action)
Blog commenting in relevant blog is also useful (both for traffic and backlinks)

Link Exchange not anymore consider as safe as before. Answer Posting (like on yahoo answers) is kinda new concept on SEO.

Instead of posting on a forum, why don't you search it in google. Theres SOOOOO much information out there and I'm doubtful you'll get a better detailed enough response on forums to help you

Improve your social presence and improve inter linking structure. Focus more on relevant inner pages instead of targeting only home page.
