To Link or not to Link

I recently read somewhere that if you link to certain websites they might want to take legal action against you. That got me into wondering if I should be posting my website's link everywhere, or maybe just reliable sources?

Link to people who are in the same field you. That will boost your credibility with search engines

No one can take any legal action because you can put a link there only if they allow through comments, guest post etc. And if they find it unappealing they can remove it by themselves

If any of the website has the option to post external links you can post there no one can take any legal action on that because these sites are offering to post links on their websites.

Ok, thanks for all your replies. I also want to know, because I once again read somewhere, if you link exchange with another website it doesn't help with SEO. The link has to be "one-way". Is this true? Thing is I have a new website but it's not getting any traffic and I submitted it on multiple, well established directories.

Umm... that's interesting. I will appreciate if you can tell us where did you actually read that info. I have a feeling that you were pertaining to this recent news but if not, please share.

Sharing is sexy after all.

You should not give them a dofollow until you have taken permission from them
