It's not accurate. I'm really trying to rack my brain on a good analogy, but I can't come up with a witty one right now. But basically it's like Nielson ratings.

A visitor isn't counted unless they have that toolbar installed. So, the majority of internet users do NOT have that toolbar installed. Therefore, it's only a sample of visitors that come to your site.

Every stat you get from Alexa should be taken with a grain of salt. It can be a gauge of improvement in your sites popularity, but not an accurate representation of actual visitors. If you want that, then use Awstats or some other stat counter that comes with your hosting account. Also, there are plenty of free ones out there, such as Google Analytics.

Hi,
Alexa ranking is so easy to fake! I no longer trust or use it! Maybe if they tighten up the ranking system

I also am not a fan of the Alexa ranking system. Not the most accurate portrayal of your site's traffic in relation to others. Although I do imagine the top 20 or so give a pretty good idea of actual top 20 rankings.

Alexa should change the way they rank sites. If their ranking solely depends on the alexa toolbar installed in the browser then its all about "how-many-people-are-visiting-your-site-with-alexa-toolbar-installed", and this is not a very reliable source of your sites ranking. Unless Alexa pays Dell to have alexa toolbar installed on all PCs, just like Google asked Dell to install Google in their PCs
