Alexa ranking

Last week my Alexa ranking for LouisWorld.ca was 1,000,000+.

Today it's at 604,220! That's quite ajump wouldn't you say? What could explain it?

More people visiting your site with the Alexa toolbar installed is usually the case. My blogged out blog went from no data to 1,100,285 in the first week, and I think that's because I installed the toolbar recently.

Yeah, I've posted somewhere before.

Alexa rankings are just a waste time actually. Besides giving some indefinite information.

Alexa is easily manipulated. Just go to www.alexa.com and type in your website at the traffic rankings page.

Do that everyday, and it skips around 100,000 websites per update. Of course, it stops at around 500,000, but that doesn't stop it from being unreliable.

Alexas unreliable for low traffic sites definately because visiting your site a few times when your rank is in the millions makes a difference. But i wouldnt say its crap its definately accurate enough when your dealing with higher traffic sites.
It can be manipulated but what cant?

To a marginal extent that's true, but the magnitude of ease of manipulation severely disfigures Alexa in this context.

Besides that, I do not see how Alexa can boost your traffic anyhow. It's not like it's an SE where your site is ranked higher and therefore seen by more people.

Perhaps if you reach the top 100,000 or so then Alexa will list your website in their main page, but honestly, who in the world goes to Alexa.com to look for stuff?

That said, it all boils down to your objectives. What exactly do you want to do with Alexa?

Boost traffic? No.

Check on your traffic stats? Yes.

Feel good when your rank gets better? Perhaps.

Does anything else besides that? No.

Even though it can be tricked, there's still a number of people who use the Alexa ranking to judge how good a site is. For example http://www.text-link-ads.com/ who use the ranking for assessing how much a link is worth on your site.

I kind of like Alexa, since I don't have the toolbar installed on my machine it does actually provide somewhat 'consistent' feedback. I know that I'm by no means receiving millions of visitors perday or even ranking where they put me, but I do like looking at the pretty graphs it provides me.

I see value in the actual Alexa rankings when the 3 month average is in the top 100,000. As mentioned previously it can be faked, but that's just sad for people who feel the need to do this. I don't and I like seeing when my traffic goes up on a montly basis and averages change. To hell with daily readings though. pfft

I pay attention to the sites at the top of the rankings, but it can get iffy the further down you go IMO.

You can improve your Alexa ranking by just having the Alexa toolbar installed and visiting your site on a regular basis.
