Will BlogRoll links weaken my PR?

I am adding a blog onto my current site. The main part of the site is the 'meat' and the blog is just to attract some attention, get some recurring visitors, active readers, etc.

I currently have wordpress running off of the same URL. I also plan to use this blogroll as a way to exchange links to my main site for someones blog in this section.

Now, how will this effect PR? I know having lots of links like a blogroll weakens its value. Should I make the blog a whole separate website and link out to it? I would like to keep it internal with the site for branding, visitors browsing, etc.

Ideas, suggestions. This is a concept I just started thinking about today and would love to discuss.

I believe it's believed that it will affect your PR, but I can't imagine it affecting it enough to really matter. Just as long as you aren't linking to 100 ****** sites, a few hundred gambling, and ****** services. Get my drift?

Make sure that the links in your blogroll are relevant or at least quality sites that are located in the preverbial good neighborhood. If you follow these steps and qualifications it should actually benefit your PR or at least not hurt it. Of course this is speculation.

Hoarding PageRank isn't a good strategy, link out to blogs that you find interesting and you think your readers might find useful.

I agree. It is not proven but linking to related sites may have a positive influence in terms of your sites worth to SE.

It will definitely be only links to related/quality sites.
Thanks for the input.

one more thing...

My blog main page is a .php extension. Will this effect SEO in any manner?

If so how can I get my WordPress main page to register as an HTML?

This seems to be a good 'how-to' article. It really is easy to do.

Great tutorial, I am comfortable with permalinks for blog URLs.

However any resources for getting my main blog homepage to end in a .html extension as opposed to .php?

Two quick assumptions to be careful with:

1) Linking out will affect PR--Yeah, in a small way...but PR is not the objective...SERP Ranking and traffic is. Start getting known in the blog community and the links will come back. As Peter says...hoarding PR is not cool. Think of it as "bogarting" in the seasch engine world (grin)...

2) Does a php extension actually get less traction than html...I personally don't think so.

Has anybody done some empirical testing that they are willing to share?

Best

Google should hire someone to represent their company in answering these questions on forums. So far SEO is all about intelligent guesses on how your site be treated by Search Engines. :-D

i think the whole idea is that they want the best sites to come up in the results. not the ones that have manipulated the search engine to come out on top.

plus, they already do. Read Matt Cutt's Blog.

I believe that a blog on your page is better than a seperate page. The idea is to bring people back again and again as well as get them involved as part of the "family". Any simple ideas to attract people to a blog. I started mine and have had little action so far. Love the blog idea just need something to get it rolling.
