Link image serving question

When you link site A to site B – is there any known benefit of serving the graphic portion from site B versus serving it locally?

What do you mean under "graphic portion" and "locally". These terms sounds pretty incongruent to me

Well, maybe discordant, but not incongruent.

If I was going to link to your site with a graphic banner. Would there be any SEO advantage to having the banner served from your site as opposed to having the banner image located on my site. (in addition to the anchor text)

I think it won't work either way. In my experience, due to the problems with UNICODE, I put Chinese characters links into graphic images and put them on the website. After a while, I figured out that these graphic images don't get spidered! Simply put, even though they linked to inner pages of the website, there were not indexed. So, images and banners are not the best way to get any advantage in backlinks. Regular text links still work.
