Articles and duplicate content

It's my first post, so go easy on me

I wrote a blog entry on my business blog that I'd like to ever-so-slightly tweak and submit to article sites like Go Articles so I can get some backlinks. If this is posted on my blog and submitted as an article, will I get penalized for duplicate content?

Not penalised but the article may be filtered out and raked lower on your site. Make sure you re-write the article from scratch.

Thanks for your reply -- is there a way to compare the article once it's re-written to the blog entry to judge whether it's considered duplicate content?

yes search for a site called copycat in google, i forget the exact link, but it compares to pages and tells you the % of how much is duplicate

You may also use copyscape, I have found it to be very reliable.
Find it here http://www.copyscape.com

It is also recomendable that you run copyscape every once in a while just to make sure no one is stealing content from your site.

Are you sure you weren't thinking of Copyscape? I've actually never heard of this tool, and I couldn't find it in Google. If you find the URL, feel free to share

A very good explanation of the duplicate content penalty can be found here: http://www.jamesbrausch.com/?p=4

Steve beat me to it...James Brausch is an expert on the subject and has written several articles on the duplicate content issue. Basically, if you submit an article the conventional way, either manually or through an automated process, you will see a bunch of backlinks at first, and then they drop dramatically as the search engines flag most of them as duplicate content. The way to avoid this is to submit a unique version of the article to each directory.
