Determining Keyword competition strength

Is there any quick and easy way of determining how strong the competition is for a particular keyword phrase? Not necessarily how many competitors, but rather, how difficult it will be to outrank them. Thanks.

If the top ranking pages are all low PR (PR3, PR4, PR5) it's usually going to be easy to be them. If all the top ranking pages are high PR (PR7, PR8, PR9), then it might indicate a tougher competition.

No sure-fire way to tell without looking closer at the specific terms.

Heres a sure-fire way for you. http://www.wordtracker.com/ go there, use the free trial. you put in your keywords it shows how many other sites are optimized for that keyword and shows you on a scale of like 1-1000 how hard it would be to get to the #1 position. EXTREMELY useful.

That's the furthest thing from surefire. WordTracker tells you how many other sites are (supposedly) competing for the search term. It doesn't say how hard they are competing.

Well i've personally used it before and it did what it was supposed to. A site i used to have was for "free clipart" wordtracker told me that it would be easy to get to the top, as soon as google indexed my site, i was #2 right under www.clipart.com for the search "free clipart". Seems pretty sure-fire to me.

1. It was http://www.free-graphics.com but I handed it off to a friend quite a ways back to start Flanube.

2. Ok maybe its not completely surefire, buts its a great resource to find out how much competition there is for a certain keyword.

It would not be in the top without those inbound links. "Free Clipart" is a very competitive search term. No way in hell you could get a site to the #1 or #2 position without a ton of inbound links.

I never said i didnt have alot of inbound links, i just for sure didnt have 37,000 of em. Most of the inbound links i had were from smaller sites linking to me to offer clipart on their sites, so it really wasnt that much work, and yes
the term "free clipart" is a much more competitive keyword now than it was a year ago. Today was the first time ive search with that keyword since and theres tons of sites that are now there that werent before. When i was #2, it was clipart.com then my site and a bunch of 'this is my homepage' type sites under me.

Free clipart has been a competitive search term since I've had a PC. "Free clipart" isn't a 2 cent search term.
