I can't personally reccommend a particular list but a quick search of google threw up this one
http://www.arcanaweb.com/resources/a...rectories.html
but I can reccommend ezinearticles.com go-articles.con and isnare.com as good places to start

Hi All,
Unfortunately that does not quite hit the spot.
I have actually created a list of about 50 article submission sites. But doing the submission drove me nuts.
So I am looking for the best sites to post articles, where they picked from and end up on a myriad of other srticle sites.
So its the top 10 I am looking for......or an ideal articel posting service.

Try http://www.articlepostrobot.com . You can post article to about 289 sites by clicking ONE button ONCE. The site list is at http://www.articlepostrobot.com/sitelists.htm which covers most high page rank article sites.
Also, use Article Post Robot, you can make each article site have an unique version of your article. So, you do not have to worry about 'duplication penalty'.
you can request a 7-day demo by sending an email to help(at)articlepostrobot.com

One thing to be aware of is that some article directories are general - that is, they will take anything - while others accept a narrow range of topics. While it takes time, you're better off reading their terms of service and matching them. That way you don't waste time submitting articles that will never see the light of day.

Duplication penalty?
I thought having multiple links with the same good keywords was good news. Please could you tell me more?

If you blanket submit an article - either manually or through an automated submittal process, you will initially see lots of backlinks, and then slowly as the search engines note the duplicate articles, you will see those backlinks go down dramatically. As AverageGuy pointed out, the main way to avoid this is to submit a unique version of the article to each directory. In my sig is an article submitter program that does this which I use and highly recommend.

Does the programme automatically change your article? If so, how does it read afterwards?
Does it also allow you to keep keyworded links in the body text?

Artemis Pro does not change your article, you do it. You basically rewrite every paragraph in your article twice. Artemis Pro randomly chooses one of the three versions of each paragraph and builds an unique article for each of the many thousand submission sites. You have the total control over the contents of the article.

When I start my website I spent an agonising couple of weeks writing unique articles and I made a list of around 120 article submission sites. I thought, this is gonna be easy and I'll go straight to the top in SERPs.
A few months on and
(1) I found around half the article sites are no longer updated - this is a tip for you, always make sure they have "recent article" postings with datestamps you can see.
(2) I found you post to some sites and the articles sit there for weeks "pending review". So one thing I learnt was to not waste time posting more than one article at a time, until I knew the aite actually reviewed them.
(3) The other think I found was that some cheeky sites remove ALL of your live links, making the exercise nearly pointless.
All in all it's a labourious exercise - but stick with it.
I think the best sites are probably searchwarp and buzzle
Good Luck

Sorry newbie here, but I was wondering what's the purpose of submitting articles to other sites ?
I thought the best way is for your own site to have content ?

You want good relevant content pointing to content on your site. Some directory listing, blogs and forum sigs. Keep it varied, thats it in a nutshell.
