EDU & GOV Links?
I've seen people place extra emphasis on links that come from edu and gov TLD. Do links from these sites really carry extra weight in google and other search engines?

This is one of the more hotly debated topics in SEO these days. I'm not sure anyone really knows for sure outside of Google.
In any case, I think it's very possible that they may carry a bit more weight, but the actual causal factor may be indirect. It may be that pages on .edu and .gov sites tend to have higher TrustRank, and thus provide more link juice.
Pure speculation on my part, however.

I've always wondered, how do you get a .edu domain?

I agree with Bcombs that the .edu and gov links carry a bit more mojo. Except if your in some linked group called sponsored ads smacked between a gambling site and viagra site it could have negative effects on how G perceives your website.

Yes, I have information that Edu and Gov domains have more weightage.
Even .org have more weightage than .com

I have seen no proof or indication that edu or .gov links carry more weight than any other similar links.

The trouble with .ac and .edu domains is that many are host to students pages (university webservers) and therefore are about as reliable as geocities, with the rules perhaps a bit more strict.

And here we have Matt Cutts to the rescue again!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...37348670651505
He says that it's just the fact that .gov's and .edu's generally have higher PR, and not anything to do with a Google boost. Good to know!
As with the other thread I did this in, this is just for other people wondering a same thing that want a confirmed answer. It's hard to argue when he says an engineer showed him the code itself

Yes these links carry extra weight in google. Why? because google favors these sites, because these sites are authoratative in nature. What i mean is say you have a link from a .mil even. Now google looks at this .mil as being a authority on what? military of course. So if you have a link coming from a .mil and your site is somehow military in nature google will weigh this link very heavily, as not just anyone can get a .mil link.
Don't forget not always what matt cutts says is necessarily a reflection of whats real. he can skirt an answer .....they arent going to tell use all their secrets.

I tend to disagree with you there, and think Matt is telling the truth.
