Internal Linking - does index.html affect anything?

Good morning.

Google gives my site (for example) www.xyz.com better PageRank than www.xyz.com/index.html.

My incoming links from outside sites link to www.xyz.com, however internally I link directly to index.html which brings users to the same page.

Is this an issue that needs to be addressed? When I link internally should I link directly to www.xyz.com as oppossed to index.html?

A question I have been pondering, I appreciate any responses.

Have all of your internal links go to the same place as the external so you aren't sreading the link weight. In your case have them all going to xyz.com.

Eventually Google may figure out that they're the same thing, but it could take a while.
