There are tools to check whether the existing page is 404 or not. If the page mentioned in the excel definitely has your link then you can check whether it is 404 or not. In my onion there is no other way.

Your thoughts on the tools provided in this thread already? Will they help the thread creator out or not?

Kate, this might be difficult to check because some of the places he left your link might be in moderation and take time to be approved.

You could try putting the url in quotes in the search box but that will only work if Google has indexed the page at the time you check.

Some things to do on those URLs:
  • Are the URLs still valid (i.e. they stille exist)
  • Do they still contain a link to you
  • Is it a follow link
  • Does the destination still exist

I don't know of a free online tool that does all that. Screaming Frog can help you do some of it or maybe all if you get clever.

I think some link cleaning service providers have tools to gather this sort of data and more.

Have you tried using screaming frog? (you can check it here- http://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider/)

I found a post about this tool where you can identify those 404 websites that linking to you.
read it here - http://techating.com/2013/04/two-gre...-site-crawler/

Hope it helps.

Google does not show all links in Webmaster Tools. It doesn't want to let you know all that they know about your site. But it's nice to look at what they do tell you.

If you have a long list to check then you can check that list with the help of Reciprocal link checker of Webconfs.com. I am sure this tool would be the best tool for such situation. webconfs.com/reciprocal-link-checker.php

I can second majestic. A lot of SEO agencies use it as a secondary check. It is not wise to stick to one tool because it can limit your perspective. I would use a range of tools, depending on budget, to get a "second opinion" as it were. All tools can go through anomalies or developing bugs that give you incorrect/inaccurate results at times.

I've also used ahrefs, monitor backlinks, webtrends, LRT, SEOMoz and a few others over the years whose names at the current point in time slip my mind.
