Couple Newb questions about SEO

Ok so the basic idea of SEO is to submit sites to search engines and bring the ranking up?

Now currently i will be getting a huge site developed, can't get into trade details at the moment. I have read somewhere here that a site has to be specially developed to do SEO? What does this mean, what should i request from my developer so that this doesn't ruin the SEO process?

Why is SEO so important? Does it actually bring in alot of traffic?

What exactly do SEO do?

I might sound like a dumbass, but i just only heard about this SEO 2 days ago.

Thanks

Having an SEO friendly site means that you have a site that can be spidered easliy by search engines. I have a site that is straight organic seo no pay per clicks that receives around a 1000 unique visitors a month and brings in a nice supplimental income.

You should really read a tutorial up on SEO heres a good one that I know of:

I forgot to say that I learned what I know by reading forums and blogs etc. I think that is another good way to learn besides turorials. No question is a dumb question. You will never know until you ask. and I asked tons of questions to get where I am. And I'm still asking questions and always will be.

It's not only link building. You should also optimize your pages.

SEO is typically an on-going process. Initially you must optimize the content on your site, add new content, and begin link building. Then, each month, you should continue to add content and gain links. This is why many SEOs charge a monthly fee to maintain/improve SE rankings.

Although you dont always have to do an on-going SEO campaign. I have worked with clients in the past that mainly want SEO consulting during the building of their site to make sure their designers design the site with SEO in mind.

Or, clients that have existing sites and want to optimize the content on their site and that is all.

These two options can be succesful for keywords that are not highly competitive and if the webmaster maintains good SEO practices after the SEO consultant has finished his work.

For highly competitive keywords it is probably going to be necessary to have an on-going SEO campaign.
