Correct HTML
The three major search engines within their webmaster guidelines stress the importance of correct html. A test of the top four listed sites in each engine produced the following results.
Google
17 warnings

Yahoo
12 warnings

MSN

Search term: correct html
HTML Tidy was used to check the correctness of each search result. The settings for Tidy were:
Input: Default
Output: Default
Encoding: Default
DocType: Auto
Switches: None Activated
This was a very generic and very limited test. It appears that the html used is basically correct; although, many warnings were prevalent. Only one result contained html errors.
In fairness to the search engines, they stress correct html; not, perfect html. I will leave you, the reader to draw your own conclusions.
