Usually on those article posting websites, the owner has a set of editorial guidelines which state's how many links can be posted in the article and in the author bio section.

It's hard to give a set number of links

Well I would put no more then 2 links to my own website but also put 1 or 2 links to another website (High PR one) as reference link's.

Let's see what other members think.

Depends on the Site's owner guest post guideness. Most of times every admin only allow 2-3 links in 1 articles. If he don't mention anything then only put link when it is mostly needed. So that it looks natural Not Spam.

According to my knowledge two links are considered the best for one website on one page.

According to SEO point of view, 2 to 3 links are enough.

What facts you have to backup this claim or did you just repeat what was mentioned?

If the site owner doesn't limit you, then it entirely depends on how many links you actually need. Just be mindful and make sure the links you put in your article are relevant and important to support your message. Also, it would be counter-productive for you if you will be overly self-promotional in your guest post. 1 to 2 links to your own site should be enough as snakeair said. Have more than that and people will start to hate you instead.

Posting articles on other sites is a way to get too many links, may be spammy and natural or high pr links,to your site as you don't know how spammers will ..so if you put 1 or 2 links in your article to your site, that will be best..

Two link will do. One link in the main article and one at the end of the article.

According to many sources, only the first link counts. Everything else is worthless.
