Advanced Onpage SEO
I was hoping some of our resident experts could give us their sage advice on advanced onpage SEO. More than the basics like keywords in TITLE, metatags and body text...and using header tags, bold, etc. I would like to see what others have done that have improved their SERPs.

There is no magic bullet on-page seo. You can mess with keyword percentages, etc and it might help you in Yahoo and some other engines but it's generally not worth my time.
Take more time to get quality links from authority and like subject sites.
Good luck.

I 'grew up' using on-page optimization and still do it most of the time. However, like Buskerdoo says it doesn't pay off in many engines and TAKES ALOT OF TIME. I'd spend your time building links instead.
If you still want to do this, let me know and I can send you some tips.

I am still interested. I completely understand the importance of links and will continue to build them but I am in a competitive field and every little bit of SEO helps. So throw some tips my way.

To expound a little bit on this. One obvious thing is that if your page doesn't mention your targeted keywords in certain places like the Title Tag, and mixed in the content of the page then it probably won't show too good for your chosen keywords. With that said, I agree that links rule the SEO world.

One thing I have noticed lately with MSN is that if you have keyword title, keyword h1, and keyword in first sentence you seem to actaully get a penalty. Any thoughts on that from others? I have not experimented much with MSN.

Other things I've done that I don't see listed here:
* keyword, but relevant alt-text
* title tags with some links to internal pages
*anchor link varying (word stemming) to other pages on the site
*in places where I might have use or need for a table, give the table and id and a summary
* image ids

Name some of your images more relevante names - instead of button1.jpg - use - austin-apartments.jpg
austin-apartment-rentals.gif - then have your alt tags correspond, take it step further and have it link to a page about austin apartment rentals.

As friends have pointed out about the tactics, it's nearly the era when more and more search engines turn into link counting to rank websites. So you can find some purely flash designed websites but with high rankings through a lot of links.
As another point, it's nice if you have more texts than images on your web pages.

Use on page SEO for setting the pages theme and use linkbuilding for raising your pages ranking for those themes.
