Would it not be better to rewrite the PHP based URLs to HTML using mod-rewrite?

I also feel that one should validate their pages regularly for W3C/XHTML compliance to make sure that the sites get indexed properly in the search engines.

Just to add to that, you can skip onpage optimization....just keep writing good content(by default, if you want returning visitors) and focus on backlink building...

Seeing the trend nowadays...i would rank onpage optimization say a 1 out of a 10

If you want to beat the serps in G, incoming anchor text is the key

Most of those directories - want money, my boss isn't willing to pay..
and Dmoz has been down (you can't add URLs ) for the past couple of weeks

That’s some great advice. I will have to try some of those suggestions. I paid a company $350 to my website at the top of the Yahoo list. They guaranteed I would get work from it. I got a lot of hits and downloads of my profile and references, but no jobs! They were the ones who got richer.

I do think it is important to try different strategies in getting people to recognnize your site. I find it fascinating that blogging has taken off..just when everyone thought the written word was dead.

hi john,
mine site was ranking at 1st position from last 15 days on google. but yesterday it suddenly goes back to 100s. on all pages.Even the caching is of just last 1 week for all the pages. what can be the reason for it. can any1 suggest plz .................

Excellent John, the points about using the Meta tags are specially true, as still many argue that they are not important anymore but they actually are.

Content must be readable and understandable. SEs are like humans so bear with it

For images and flash presentations, put an alt tag because alt tags are also important and they act as keywords for images.

eg: <img src="www.mysite.com/image.jpg" alt="keyword">

Nice intro to SEO. You should make it into a white paper and get it out there.

Everyone tells me that meta tags no longer matter. Even in a class of mine the professor said "Forget meta tags." I keep them at the top of my pages "just in case." They still play some role, but I can't find out what.
