Lightbulb Will a Site get penalized if it links to a penalized site?

Before I state my Query let me tell you the situation --

Site A is linking to Site B (can be any sort of backlink say - image link, text link).. someday Site B gets penalized!

Query: Will Site A also get penalized just because Site B got penalized and Site A is linking to it?

Does rel="nofollow" tag help in anyway in this situation?

No, if you make the link "nofollow", you won't be panalized. Google follows only "Dofollow " links.

Unless when you add a nofollow attribute but besides that you get penalized because that is very obvious that is a bad link.

1. Dofollow does not exist.

2. Google follows ALL links for indexing purposes regardless if the link is nofollow or not. Setting a link with nofollow attribute value only does Google not to pass rank.

Search engines will not use a "Nofollow" link for rating.
Google will follow it, and Yahoo will even index it.

These links will not be ignored because of a "Nofollow", but it will protect you from bad ratings from the other website.

To answer your question. Yes, so be cautious of who your linking to and insure you properly assign the Nofollow value where needed.

In regards to your question, Matt Cutts a couple of years ago touched on this topic and my understanding of the video is that Site A will be ok if there's just a few links to site B. He further explains that it is expected and understood that sites sometimes will go stale, fade out, 404 or even become spammy.

Hopefully the video above will be helpful in your seo endeavors.

YES, Site A will also feel the heat if all backlinks of site were penalized by google.

And you said if you put No-follow tag on it means you know that this site is bad for linking then why you are linking.

Whether or nor Google follows only "Dofollow " links is a hotly debated question : ) but I think if you make the link "nofollow", you won't be panalized.

Is google or any search engine said that links on above PR-4 sites help you to give ranking or your site will not penalized?

Page rank is the myth guys. just do quality work, make search engine & user friendly site. offer great quality content. Don't get confused in do-follow or no follow links. or PR-1 or Pr-4 sites links.

If the link is nofollow link, then your site will not get penalized, as google does not go through such links. If it was dofollow link, then yes, it will penalize your link as dofollow link pass link juice to your site.

You won't get penalized for a nofollow links, and if your website is of high authority, then I don't think even dofollow link will have any impact on your SEO.

If you get enough follow links from sites that are penalized, that will definitely negatively impact your site's PR and standing.

If the link coming from that website is nofollow link, then your site will not get penalized, Google does not see such links. If the link is DOfollow, then the problem arise for you.

Yes, you could become penalized. Google will begin to associate you with the penalized site. You don't want to apart of network of links that involve a penalized site.
