We need more information to help you. What kind of site? ecommerce? blog? lead gen? What keywords are you targeting? Do your landing pages have links to other pages of your site? The way analytics packages work is they require someone to click to another page of your site in order to not count as a bounce. Are you making it easy for a visitor to click to another page? Even if that page is a thank you page after filling in a form.

If you have a blog, you would suggest visitors with some interesting blog post within your article which they would be forced(with curiosity) to visit and read.

Interlinking to related articles are other major boost.

See yourself as a visitor to your site and think why would you stay to read more and plan accordingly. You need to create a good user experience.

Are you getting a lot of traffic from StumbleUpon? Because that's how you increase your bounce rate.

Otherwise, I'd start working on your content: if people visit your site from search and don't see what they want - they leave.

You have to analyze the sources from which your website is getting high bounce rate. You should analyze the web-pages on your website, which are getting high bounce rate. After analyzing you can do changes to your web-pages so to decrease the bounce rate.

As mentioned above you should check your landing page and try optimize you content. Well, if you have blog, bounce rate info in google analytics doesn't always shows the real picture. Imagine that you are searching some info about particular movie review and you click on some suggested "movie blog" which happens to have review of this particular movie. After you read it you usually close this page as you got info you were searching for. Analytics will count your visit as a "bounce", while you were reading the whole review. So in this case it is better to know if people are actually reading landing page(which means that you have interesting and relevant content), but unfortunately analytics can't calculate time on bounce page, so you don't know if people are fleeing after one second on landing page or they actually read content and then leave. You have some tricks and plugins to calculate time spent on bounce page. I suggest you do this before you decide to radically change content.

Well if your website is blog or content based then this much of bounce rate is quite a general. Though for eCommerce this is certainly a pain point.

So for better recommendations, you should share your theme as well.

There are only two reason behind it, one is your website is not so attractive and 2nd one is that traffic on website is not related. for these you can make your website more attractive and user friendly, and for second analyze your keyword and select only those keywords, related to your services or products.

Mine was 62%. It is selling food and beverage training and certifications. I put a widget at the upper left that said boldly "Fun Things to Do while You Are Here". Then I created a few videos to entice them like a GEICO-athon, a video I made from 20 GEICO movies that everyone that i knew liked. Even if they only watch a video and don't buy anything, that helps my bounce rate and thus Google Rank. If they are having fun on my site, they are probably more likely to buy, and they are MUCH more likely to recommend me to a friend.

Ignore it and start focusing on those that do stay on your site because they ARE your customers. You will always have bots that hit your site (even if you tweet a link twitter does have a bot that visits) these bots are factored into that so called "bounce rate".
