They are technically different locations. Your best move is to pick one and stick with it.

Also, register both with Google Webmaster Tools and in the settings set the same one as the display version.

Finally, it can be a good move to make the non chosen version 301 redirect to the chosen one. This forces all to the correct one.

What Tiggerito said.

I personally don't bother with telling Google which version because that only tells Google, not the other search engines, which is your preferred version. The 301 redirect method tells all search bots which is the preferred (indirectly).

Yes both are different if you don't redirect with 301 the your visitors divided in two parts.

Yes Google sees www and non-www versions of your sites as different subdomains.

However for an average user and small business owner, there is absolutely no difference between www vs non-www. It’s completely a personal preference.

What’s important is that you stay consistent with the one that you chose at the time of starting your website for more effective seo

you have to redirect the adress without 3w to adress with 3w. Otherwise it may cause problems with dupplicate content

Just focus on one way. The difference exist for searching machines. In that matter it is the most effective to ALWAYS use same type of links. I prefer using 3W-link. By the way, it is not so difficult to add them, right?

As the guys above said. Plus watch out if you still open /index.html and/or /index.php - 301 redirect them too to the chosen version

If you are redirected 301 www to no-www or non-www to www then both treats equally. If you are not redirected then they are different.

You will create an endless loop if you do that.

By default when someone types in www.yourdomainame.com the web server looks for you home page. Each web server has a hierarchy of which extension it looks for as the home page or even if the home page is default or index.

My point is that there are some platforms that could open index.php and/or index.html if you type www.yoursite.com/index.html and/or /index.php

That creates duplicate content issues as these URLs are essentially different pages for Google. The other way is to use relation in the code.
