Alexa traffic rankings really are a joke
The traffic for my site has been steadily increasing while my alexa traffic ranking has been getting worse. I went from 300k to 600k. I knew the tool was not that accurate, but now I have solid proof.

The higher your traffic is, the more accurate Alexa is. If your Alexa is less than 100,000, it's already pretty accurate. An Alexa less than 10,000 is normally quite accurate.

The Alexa ranking stats from what I gather is from people who have the Alexa toolbar installed. My first website I had a Alexa Ranking less than 100,000 and was only getting around 15 visitors a day. My site was through SBI then and most of my visitors came through the SBI forum who all have the Alexa toolbar. So the ranking is definitely way off.

Okay guys, all of you amaze me because I knew it was accurate but it seems that you've gone through the salt of alexa pains to get to these conclusions.
I've got a question and I need your help :
I've got a blog setup.. by checking my webstats and also my subscribers there's a good amount of traffic... made a comparison and I got more visitations and subscribers from my friends blog. (I ran on blogger.com but have hosted it myself for reasons that it would be more beneficial to me).
After almost 2.5 months I still see my own data in Alexa as "no traffic data" in it . That's really strange ? I can't figure it out for the life of me and it's driving me insane. While if I get like 5,234,289 ... or even a lousy ranking that's fine but it's as if I'm blind.
Appreciate if anyone at all can comment on this.

Alexa statistics are really useless. Vern if none of the people who visited your site have the Alexa toolbar installed than as far as Alexa is concerned no one has ever visited your site. I would imagne though, that someone had the toolbar installed who also visited your site. It's probably more that Alexa just takes a little time before it starts showing data for you. I'll be honest I don't know because I don't pay much attention to Alexa stats.
Because they only get data from their toolbar and because a rather small percentage of people actually have the toolbar their stats are based on a very small percentage of people's browsing habits. It's probably not scientifci either as I would guess people with the toolbar tend to fit some kind of profile and visit the same kind of stats.
That's why the stats are so far off for less travelled sites, but become more accurate for high traffic sites. I think my own site nearly cracked the 100,000 barrier not too long after launching. Even in my wildest dreams my site has never been in the top 100,000 site visited by anyone. It likely got a boost because it's a tech oriented site and because I did visit the site with the toolbar.
In the end it's not worth worrying at all about what your Alexa ranking is. Very meaningless stat.

Alexa rank above 1 lakh is not judged correctly in my view.
But when u get under 1 lakh rank, then u would be shown up correctly

well, if you're using text-link-ads, you would be bothered with alexa rankings since it affects the price of your links...
otherwise, i wouldn't be bothered...

Hi Vangogh and John,
Thanks for sharing and your comments bring light to this topic. It's really too bad that Alexa does not in fact reflect true webmaster ranking but it does seem strange to me that a lot of my friends are using this tool to judge their own marketing efforts.
Do you have an alternative to suggest in order to accurately judge our own rankings and if not, is there a manual calculation that I can utilize ?
Eager to hear from you.

Google Analytics. It's not going to give you a "ranking" but it will give you plenty of useful traffic stats

Well if you have the access to your webstats then you can easily see what actually has been going on with your websites... till it went online...
