1) Make sure that your website doesn’t have any broken links and unnecessary tags. Broken links always put negative effect on loading time of your website
2) Optimize Images
3) Choose correct format for images
4) Keep Design and Interface Simple
5) Optimized CSS code will work like a wizard to reduce loading time
6) Reduce the number of plugins you use on your site
7) Minimize HTTP Requests ... According to Yahoo, 80% of a Web page’s load time is spent downloading the different pieces-parts of the page: images, stylesheets, scripts, Flash, etc. The more on-page components, the longer it takes for the page to render.

Are you talking about WORDPRESS or a WEBSITE ??

Yes there is a huge difference as wordpress is a blog not a website.

Start with your theme. Do not use images. Use only text. If using images are unavoidable, edit them first to reduce its size before uploading. Do not use plugins to do this if you can especially if you are on a shared hosting to conserve server resources.

I think that in some cases that would be reasonable to update your current web hosting solution. Loading time depends on the network provider of your web hoster. So keep that in mind as well.

Colleagues entries above, I would add:
- Optimization of scripts (java-script, jquery, etc.) For WordPress are special plug-ins to optimize such scripts,
- Reducing weight pictures that are placed on the page

Apparently these are the obvious things, but often people forget about them

Eliminate render blocking javascript and css, Load all js and css before closing your body tag..Use caching plugins if you are on wordpres.. or use well coding standards if your site is running on other platform.
