Some good SEO Tips for Sigs!
hey , I'm coming up to the 100 posts and I'm trying to give something back. I don't know if this has been posted any where else but ,
Sigs can be a valuable tool , depending on how often the forum gets crawled , how good the forum is it's self at SEO , and the number of posts you've got.
1 post = 1 backlink
Having a sig like http://www.techblogarticles.blogspot.com/ Tech Site , is not very good for SEO.
This how ever is better.
But the best is Tech Talk The best Tech Talk Site
I'm not 100 % sure on this but it would make a lot of sense if it's correct info.

Sig links generally get very little weight as threads fade down the queue (deeper into the forum structure/heirarchy). You are not going to get a whole lot of SEO benefits from them even if the forum (whichever one you post at) does not hide them from spiders (are they shown by default to guests?) or put rel="nofollow" on them.
They are very good, however, for branding and, depending upon the quality of your posts, for driving traffic.

Bernard, I'm not sure I follow you. Are you saying that the indexed sig decreases in value as the thread grows older and are not longer getting indexed? If that is true could you please explain why that is?
I though that a link was a link and actually that a link from an "older" pages was even more valuable than a link from a "new" page?
Thanks.

Think about the link structure of a forum as a tree with the home page as the starting (root) node. Any given thread (containing your post/sig link) is near the top of the tree when you first post (home > category > 1st thread). It's only 3-4 levels deep (links away) from the home page (where most of the site's PR/authority is held).
In time, the thread will move down the list onto page 2, page 3 etc. of the category thread listings. It begins to move down the tree heirarchy so that it is many levels (links away) from the home page. The PR/authority of the page will diminish over time if it doesn't have a bunch of external site links referencing it.

I see what you mean, I think...
I can see why it might be spidered less and less because is more and more clicks away from the homepage but on the other hand it might have gotten a PR above 0 over time.
Isn't it better to have a link from a PR 1,2 or 3 page that doesn't get indexed frequently than from a page with a PR 0 that does get indexed?

All links are good. My point is that sig links don't offer a whole lot of SEO value. If you need links for SEO, there are better ways to spend your time and effort than posting in forums.

I'm not really sure I agree.
While it is true that it will move farther and father down the "food chain" it is also aging and becomming more ingrained into the web in general. The pluses clearly outweight the negatives.. if you are going to post on a forum it is likely useful that you have a signature, however purchasing one for $100.00 a month, that is a bit much, even if 1 post - 1 backlink, it wouldn't be hard to reach the point where your getting to many backlinks per month for your own good.

Well yes... you will get a link back to your site thats no problem... but just think for a second... what are we all talking about all the time... "Good quality links from related market"... isnt it.... so you should look for sites that are related to your niche and get links from there...
Getting links from a non-related niche will make things worse for your website... as google will be unable to find your websites neighbourhood.... Alright...
Someone can say that this will give me a high pagerank... but what will you do of a high pagerank... I would go for a high trustrank than a high pagerank...
Take care
Manish
