That's a strange question. What do you call a high ranking. If you mean the top five or even ten then by definition there are only five or ten people in the world who could answer the question. They may not even be on this forum.

I just mean the traffic that you recieve. Even if you are ranking like 20th. Does any of the traffic you pull in actually equal business? Thats all

That's a matter of conversion. It's something I addressed in this article.

Being placed on the search engines is just like having shop set up in a high traffic area. If you're marketing doesn't work, you could get a million uniques a day and still not turn any visitors into customers.

But conversely I don't think there is any evidence that traffic from Google converts to sales any less well that trafic from any other source. Being found on any search engine can't guarantee business as John says, but you aren't going to get business if you aren't found. And in that regard traffic from Google is as good as any.

If not why is everybody breaking their ass to get ranked?

John,

You should take that filter off. What's wrong with the a*s*s* word?

I always try to find out where my customers come from. The visitors who've signed up for my services. Most don't come from search engines. Most come from some forum or some host directory where they've read reviews of V7.

Search engine traffic - poor quality.
Web hosting review sites - high quality referrer.

Just my opinion here.

That rather assumes only one keyword exists, doesn't it?!

You're correct. So if we grant that there maybe 10 popular search terms that a web designer might be found under, and then we only count the first five in the SERP, the number is still only 50. And that is without allowing for the possibility that the same page appears in the first five for more than one of the ten search terms.
