External Link Advice
What would be some of the best ideas to get external links back to your site. Most of the other sites that I deal with are competitors or huge suppliers. I'm not exactly sure what the best route to get quality links back to me would be. Is there a loop hole somewhere? Is there a secret? Any ideas?

Thanks for the advice. Could you go in depth with "quality directories"? My quality information on my site only contains to my business and the services that I offer my clients. And I will be on this forum often, for I just found it today. Thanks again for the advice.

I would definitely look at getting the site listed on V7N's directory.
It isn't a free directory, but well worth the fee.
directory.v7n.com/
You can also find a ton of directories that you can submit to here --
www.v7n.com/forums/directory-announcements-promotions/
P.S. I wouldn't stick my nose up at new quality directories. Today's PR0's are likely to be tomorrow's PR6's.

Can a "bad" directory effect you in a negative way if I submit my URL to it? Is there such thing as a bad directory?

I wouldn't personally want to be included in a directory that is filled with spam sites and I definitely wouldn't link back to them.

There are no shortcuts
Cricket gave you some great advice. I'd like to expand on the article publication route. If you can write a great article relevant to your website's subject matter, you can easily get 20 or more quality links.
There are certain websites that publish a LOT of content. The editors and publishers of these sites need good material to keep the machine running. It attracts readers and helps them sell advertising. In other words, good articles give them their business model.
Find these sites, and you'll find a great link opportunity. I write a lot of articles on SEO, so I seek out websites that publish SEO articles, marketing articles, small business articles and the like. Want to know how I find them? I Google various key phrases along with "+articles" or "+submit articles."
Give it a try. Enter your key phrase into Google plus some article phrases. If you'll write about custom widgets, Google this: custom widgets +articles.
If you apply yourself, there's really no end to this method. Trust me.
Good luck!

Thank you for all of your help. BTW, "Hook 'em Horns"! I have only been in the website side of the industry for a short while. I am picking it up fairly fast but like many others that I have seen, I am only struggling with Google. I have even thought about doing the Google Adwords just to put my company on the right hand side. I'm getting there. I re-designed my site so it wasn't complete flash. That seemed to help out a good bit. Once again, thanks for your help. I will take this advice and try and utilize it to the best of my ability and just keep pluging away.

Yes, directory and article submission help a lot in getting inbound links. But if you really want to bridge the gap between you and your competitors, the major strategy used by good SEOs is 'Competitive Intelligence'. It involves studying the keywords, links and sites that are sending traffic to your competitor’s website and building backlinks using that information.
Checke here for more details about Competitive Intelligence in Link Building

As the way out here I see working on the original content, this is where you can compete with huge suppliers.
