I'm #1 for Travel Blog on MSN but it brings in no traffic - actually Google's own blogsearch brings in more traffic for that KW term! Nowadays I prefer searching on MSN as it indexes new pages much quicker, but it needs to take some of Google's marketshare if MSN is to become a market force in the search engine industry.

DarrenC, does it mean that the snippet (description of page) that appears on search engine results page is not attractive enough for searchers to click even if it's at number one in MSN?

Most of the time the Search Engines will show the snippet which contains the keywords on that webpage and maybe two lines of content. Most people click on stuff like that I think, especially since they see the keywords AND if they're together, it's better for them! |

#1 in google for the term "Music Gifts" at 422,000,000, it goes no lower than #3. When I took on the project, was not even listed in G. #2 in MSN at 22,298,791 and #5 in Yahoo at 94,400,000. I'm pleased but there was a time where we were #1 in all three, and that was akin to reaching the top of Everest..Ok well maybe not totally like that, but you all get the point.

One of my best clients site ranks between 11 - 20 on google for the term "art", quoted or unquoted. (Results 11 - 20 of about 2,630,000,000). Pure seo optimizations and took 1.5 years and an ocean of coffee to do that.

Back in 98 - 2000 I ranked top 10 for almost every credit card related keyword you can think of. The success was driven through affiliate sites whose pages were hosted under the same URL on our server.
That way of doing things has died... It was fun while it lasted though

Similarly I once had #5 for half a day on UK Altavista (when it was popular) for search engine optimisation.
