it depends on competition. for uncompetitive terms you can just have good page copy which is structured properly. for more competitive terms you will need some amount of links though.

it is a good idea to have your primary keywords in most of the inbound links.

Hi,

My best result is #1 for 'wholesale' (21,700,00) and #1 for a host of other 'wholesale' related two word phrases.(usually between 2-5 million).

I only recently achieved #1 for the one word phrase recently after 2 years of optimization work. The most noticeable things that gave that site big jumps were

a) getting rid of dynamically generated category subpages in favor of staic keyword optimized URL's

b) friendly letters looking for non-reciprocal links form big web properties

c) the Florida update -- I'm sure I'm not the only one who got helped by that but most people seemed to be very upset

of course there are less than 800 results
and #1 for stemwall with 900 results.. LOL
