I wouldn't buy a sitewide text link and I wouldn't sell a site wide link either.

I would buy site wide links and sell them. However, I'm super picky who we buy site wide links from. Or of course who we link to. It has to be the right site for the right reason, and it has to be close to being a natural link {same theme}
We have some sites that kick ass using a combination of link exchanges, 3 ways, 1 ways, recips, articles etc. I think your ok assuming you're getting site wides from a quality site. Not to mention you can't rely to heavily on site wide links. Most of you probably already know its important to use a well rounded link building campaign that gets new IBL's from all over the place.
I do admit buying site wide links can be perceived as unnatural - and potentially dangerous but I'm not ready to move a way from a seo technique I see working for us and our competitors.

For example this is a reputable PR7 website you can buy site wide links from that looks to me, super sketchy...
http://daily.stanford.edu ~ check out the side wide links on the bottom
These are the type of sitewides to stay clear away from. IMO of course.

Hello,
This is a very interesting subject. If you buy sitewides this is bad, but if the sitewides come from your site? for example on my site I've got my articles on the bottom left of my site, sitewides, can I be penalized by SE for this? or it is ok to leave the articles like it is?
Thanks

No you would not be penalized for linking internally. I checked your skin care website, all links seem to go internal ?

Yeah those internal articles you have should only help you. Now if you made a link every where on your natural elements site and linked back to my skin care site, that is questionable.

Thank you John for the tips. Since blogroll links are also sitewide links, should we refrain from giving/receiving them ?

Only if you are concerned more with Google than traffic/branding, etc.

I think John may be over-cautious - I think that *in moderation*, sitewide links can be helpful. For instance, if you already have a decent link profile that doesn't include sitewide links and you add in a *few* sitewide links, that will be helpful.

Exactly. I think Aaron Wall wrote something good on this topic saying something to the effect that "site wide links should not account for more than xx% of total links."
Can't find the link at the moment, though.

That sounds reasonable to me. I think xx would depend greatly on the quality of your other inbound links rather than being a fixed number.

Yes I agree with you Jeff, and does this mean that V7N network has sitewide links to its other sites like forums, directories and others so is it having any negative effect.
