Are sitewide links penalized by Google?
I have read somewhere else in this forum that Google does not count links with same anchor text coming from the same site. However recently I have seen some PR7 sites which have thousands of sitewide backlinks indexed in Google from the same site . That confuses me. Are sitewide links really penalized or not counted by Google?

I fail to understand why and how Google would penalize sitewide links! On the contrary, I believe that sitewide links are something good

Yup sitewide links are anything but bad. It just means you get a lot of votes from different PRs from the same website.
Thank You

That does not make them bad. They are better than just one link from the site.

Sitewide links are really very helpful... well the reason behind this being that it not only gives you links for various pages of your site that helps in increasing PR.. for eg. consider www.v7n.com it has thousands and thousands of links from where... from this very forum and blogs..directories...etc... well PR is not that helpful for rankings but they look good.. and the second reason being they are giving you free "anchor text" links to your website...now i guess everybody knows tha power of anchor text links...
Take care

Thanks for your inputs I was in two minds to buy sitewide links for my client's sites. I think I will go for it but at a slow pace alongwith building other inbound links.

I can't believe the level of discussion here. Site wide links ( off-site site-wide links, that is) are suspect. They have been for over two years. Many SEO's report negative karma after buying site-wide links. In fact, when I gave Aaron Wall site-wide links from v7n he asked that I remove them because of the nagative impact.

I still get some site-wides, but only for the traffic. I'm pretty sure they can have a negative impact on SE rankings.

I have to agree with John. I used to get as many as I could because Yahoo and MSN loved em. Now I think they may actually have a negative effect.

Because it could be picked up as artificially inflating a site's link popularity.

Yes. Google is known for implementing anti-SEO filters that are half-baked.

So do you mean that the sites can get penalized for this if yes then I cant believe it coz I have seen hundreds of sites, forums and directories having sitewide links and are very sucessful with the search engine rankings too.

When you've been around a while longer, you'll probably see people drop in rankings too, from site-wide links. It depends a lot on the overall link profile. If all you have are site-wide links, it probably isn't going to go over well.
