Showing different content based on the user's country IP and google?

Anyone know any articles or posts by matt on how to do different content for different ares in a legitimate way? Like if the person's IP was from the UK to send them to the UK section of your site automatically or have UK news show up instead of the news for US based IPs?

Hi bwb,

I don't know about articles posted by matt, but if you want to show different content depending on the geographic location of the users, you should incorporate geotargetting features in your site. Now how to do that?

One way of doing it is to install IP-Country database on your server. ip2location.com sells such databases. You can then retrieve visitor's IP address, county using ASP, PHP, JSP etc. in your application. You can check the FAQ at ip2location.com for more details.

I'm not sure whether it's the same as googlesucess has recommended, but you can also use geoip , visit maxmind.com for detail.

Ya ya i understand all that, sorry if my question wasn't clear, what are the seo implications then if google's bot comes from the USA sees content, and then comes from the UK and sees slightly different UK oriented content?

Check this video by Matt Cutts. It will answer your question.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...20126300142609

So as per Matt Cutts Google will not consider using geotargetting as cloaking and will not penalize your site. Google itself uses the geotargetting features.

It's not hard. I just did it on the sign up page so I could filter OUT US residents from making an account. However, I wouldn't recommend it for geotargetting your entire site becasue algo bots are going to perceive it as redirects. Probably better to have your incomming links geotargetted.. or host on country specific domains. (Disclaimor: Speculation on my part)..

Ya I'm thinking of just if they are from a non USA area having a couple blocks being added in with more targetted links and article links but majority of the page the same.
