Flash Websites

All that I have read has lead me to believe that flash websites cannot be optimized. But if that is true, than why have I seen websites appear on the first page of a search query that was not related to the companies name.

I click the link and a flash page is the first page I am brought to.

Does anyone know why this is? and
If it is possible to optimize a flash website? and if so how?

Yes, it's possible to optimize a Flash site. Work on links a lot and probably think about alternate content for nonflash visitors.

Another way they could be doing it is by hiding keywords and such in the html of the page, so that normal visitors dont see them, while spiders do.

Although ive heard this is frowned upon by google, so creating a non flash version is probably the best way to go

Maybe it's achieved by doorway pages, or by cloaking. These 2 techniques can get high rankings for non SE friendly websites.

Are you referring to this flash site kearstevens.com which comes at top in MSN for that phrase?

I wasn't but that is a good example of what I am talking about. The page is not in a .swf file and when an image is clicked the URL does not change, but when I click the any of the links at the top of the page the URL changes.

I read the source and it does have plenty of content and I am assuming that is what is getting them indexed.

But what about a site that has one URL and is strictly flash. The site can be a .swf file or a .com or .net

for example: www.secondpulse.net

It is very difficult to get such sites with flash and javascript indexed in Google. There are exceptions however if you can have some pages with non-flash content and high number of incoming links. A good example is guitarherogame.com. Though people say content is the king, I have seen many websites with hardly any content but ranking high in Google just because of high number of authority incoming links.

Hmm, I wish google would do a better job for flash sites

. My bud made a nice game map using flash as the homepage. When I do a search for it, I see that I out rank him when using the name of his mod just after a meta-site and the game company's forums. Another site(not meta and independent) just like mine is after mine betting his. We all link to this guy too(in our news and forums too), since he put a lot of work into his project.

What the site will have is a whole load of inbound links with the search term in the anchor text. You may find that these don't show up when you use the link operator. That's either broken or showing a non-representative sample. Your best bet for checking actual back links is to use Yahoo Site Explorer - try in that.
But inbound links will do it in Google, that'll get you your serps. Try checking for "miserable failure". See? :-)

Well thats right that optimizing a fully flash site is very much like impossible, but still many sites rank no.1 thats because they spend most of their time building tons of quality links with the anchor text they want to rank high for.

If you are going to implement flash into the site don't use it for links or textual content, and you should be fine.

and if you have a flash based site then concentrate more on link building.
