Sitemaps standard (or not)

Seems like we've got a sitemaps standard:

http://www.sitemaps.org/

from "Terms and Conditions":

<...> sponsors of Sitemaps.org: Google, Inc., Yahoo, Inc., and Microsoft Corporation <...>

The owner of DNS is the big G so it looks serious for me.

A sitemap using their standard is a good way of getting your site fully indexed.

I like to play safe, if this could be considered safer, having a sitempay complying with Google standars, in addition to versions in php, html and text format.

If you are going to make sitemap for visitors - then yes. If you are going to make sitemap for SEs then you should build a particular xml file. (The format is described in sitemaps.org)
