Your point about the direct links is right but unfortunately It may not the way you think about the PR boosting feature of such links.

Although they are direct link, but you can barely find any high PR article websites pages. Their homepage may have high PR but the ones having your articles are usually too deep inside the website structure.

Posting articles does bring some good results if they are quality articles that people pick up and post on their sites. If you want to increase PR, increase your links!!

Write quality articles with unique and helpful info. As an article directory publisher, I get so much junk being passed off as "articles" everyday.

I also have an article directory, and people do try to submit some absolute junk. This, however, is more of a matter of trying to get away with me just posting their ad than actually submitting an article.

I also use article writing and submission to increase the exposure of my own sites, and it does work.

Yes, article writing and submission is good for seo.
It is also good to get those anchor text pointing to your site.

You cannot submit to so many per day, unless you have a submission software.
I don't consider the number of article websites important. More important is the PR each article dirrectory has and how many visitors per day. I only submit my articles to EzineArticles, Associated Content (this is good if you are an American, you can make some money with it), GoArticles, and Searchwarp. There are many other good directories, but I have some issues against duplicated content.

go to a thread at my site and check out the links at the top to digg.com etc

it allows people to submit their threads to article sites so more people can read them and I get backlinks
