Rankings at Google Increase, but Decrease at Yahoo
Hi,
I have a static web site that used to be at No.1 at Yahoo for some targeted keywords. I have been building links to increase rankings at Google. Now, the rankings at Google keep climbing, but Yahoo's rankings keep dropping.
What can I do to keep both at the top? Thanks in advance!
Terry

i'm not sure how you'll do that but i must say that they use different algorithms and they have different things to prioritize on ranking your sites...are you sure it was connected on you building links?? anyway congratulations on you increasing your rankings on Google as i think it receives a lot of visitors rather that Yahoo...

I don't know how long you can expect "static" websites to sit at the top of the SERPS. I try to make my sites more dynamic, even if that means just displaying an RSS feed on the homepage.
However, if you keep building backlinks for Google then it will eventually have the desired effect on the other engines too.

Without knowing more about the URL and keywords in question I can't be specifc, but keep in mind that different search engines use different algorithms. Just because you do well in one doesn't mean you'll do well in another.
I would guess that whatever you've been doing lately is something that the Google algo likes and the Yahoo algo isn't so crazy about.
Chances are if you keep building links you will eventually rise in both, but again there's no guarantee that success in one also means success in the other.
Aaron Wall wrote a really good article comparing the major search engines and what each tends to like.
Google vs Yahoo! vs MSN Search: Comparing Search Algorithms
Even though it's not mentioned in the title the article also includes information about Ask.

yahoo changes
I am not sure if your site ramkings have changed recently, but our site visalogic.net was not ranked in yahoo for any of our keywords, but as of yesterday we are getting traffice from searches on most of our desired keywords. And google is about to do a re-index (?).
Keep doing what you are doing, build links etc, I suppose you cant keep them both 100% happy all the time.

It goes like that sometimes one goes up and one goes down, keep link building and you will master both.

I have also noticed it on some of my sites. I guess it is due to the recent yahoo update. May be they have changed their algo.

You should submit a sitemap (if you haven't done it already). You'll see the difference soon. Make sure it respects the sitemaps protocol at sitemaps.org

theBrain has a good point.
A lot of Yahoo's serps seem to be driven by their sitemap feed/product. I have this same problem with Yahoo for one of our websites. It used to rank super well in Y - then over the last 1.5 years I've been watching the pages slip away along with the Yahoo traffic.
Honestly, in my case I think its 2 fold.
1. - My keywords aren't utilized at all - { but the pages still kill it in Google.}
2. - We don't submit our products/sitemap to Yahoo and I think its killing us.
One of my goals for 2007 is to get back in Yahoo. { even though I think its dying} For me Im starting with submitting our sitemap then its on to the doing the meta keywords. Maybe that will help your website too?
Goodluck.

Good job, It is more difficult to rank high in Google than Yahoo. So to rank high in Yahoo, keep on building links and other off-page optimization.
