Google's Future
I think SE are not going to rely on links in the future because this system is being abused. So, my question is, what do you think Google is going to take into account in the upcoming years to rank sites?
I just want your opinion on this one.

My next guess would be putting a little more weight on domain age. As well as its code validity these factors tend to tell which websites have a solid standing in the Internet world. As most spammers use new domains and tend to not care about errors in their document.
Thank you

What's funny.
Google must move from links as base thing in algorithm, semantic will be the first thing to think in the future.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm.......... I think it will be user's behaviour that will determine the future of search.
With Wikipedia announcing people powered search results technology based search engine, and MSN already providing human feedback buttons on user's Internet browsers in VISTA, we may be heading towards human powered search results but I am sure that the link game is here to stay for quite a while.

I hear that AOL and Yahoo will merge in 2007. This is also something that might influence the future of Google.

The Orion Effect
It’s coming. The next generation of search engine spider is in development and site owners, webmasters, site designers and SEOs had better take note – now. If you wait to make changes to your site, you may just find yourself buried in the backwash of Google SERPs wondering where your business went.

Last summer I remember reading an article about the new direction of Google. Did some searches a minute ago and found some 411 on this. You can research it yourself by searching G for " Google Orion "
Or check out this SERP - Ori Allon
-- To say the least, it should be interesting to see how the future of this technology plays out. Its been a while since Google really shook things up.

There is, Im not sure how successful it is though. Its an option on the new version of the Google Tbar. There are 2 smiley faces where you can vote/rate a page.

I am pretty sure that Google will not count so much on links anymore.
LSI and similarity engines come next!

I totally agree about less emphasis on links. So that makes me wonder what to do next. My thoughts right now are leaning towards using other words in our websites that have to do with our theme. Words that compliment our keywords. Next, less focus on keywords in the content and more focus on the type of copywriting on the pages. On top of that my thoughts are that the best IBLs we can get in the future are going to need to be coming from more natural sources like a big phat link in the middle of an article about our topic. Or links coming from product or website reviews. Natural looking links that come from other websites that are full of words that compliment yours will probably become more important to have. While links from directories will have less power than they do now.

I think a big part of it will be incorporating the results of editorial reviews into algorithmic changes. If you haven't seen the patent, Google filed for one that basically covers the process of (according to my interpretation of it) :
Editorially reviewing small groups of sites, determining which results are the highest quality, then examining the common parameters between them. Then they can use these factors that make "good" results different than bad ones to improve the entire algo. That's the theory anyways.

This is already being done. SE look at synonimous and words that compliment the page's theme.
Say you've got a page about 'italian pasta'. It helps if you add other words like: spaghetti, olive oil, tomatos, etc...

What do you mean? More competition between the Giants? If that's what you mean, yes, I think this is going to be a good thing. It will probably mean more free tools for the web users. But you certainly know that all changes are focused first on increasing revenue for the companies starting them. So what are the other good things we (as web users) should expect?
