Google checks content synonyms

When google parses through content... does anyone know how it determines duplicate content.. such as does it check for capitalization, synonyms, etc.? to determine the the content means the same or is the same?

Google's algorithm knows how to determine duplicate content. As we know time to time Google updates its algorithm.

To check for synonyms, use the "define:" command in Google.

They use a principle of Markov algorith to determain if the text is real, written by a human so I suppose that they use the same thing with modification to determain if content is duplicated or not. I'm not sure about it, just the was I would do it

If you want to check duplicate content go to: www.copyscape.com

I've wondered about this myself - exactly HOW duplicate content is tested for. I write articles for part of my marketing and rewrite them regularly to escape the duplicate content thing. I do complete rewrites though. Not like those programs that just change several words around.

As I've said before, I think that they use Markov algorithm in one way or another but how exactly only people in Google know...

Read the official word from Google:

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogsp...e-content.html

There seems to be NO penalty for duplicate content.

Yes, but if they think that you have done it to manipulate serps then you will be penalized.

I've been penalized for duplicate content before.

Look at this sorry sucker - purerunner.com

One of these days I need to get back in there and clean it up.

[qoute]...we prefer to focus on filtering rather than ranking adjustments ... so in the vast majority of cases, the worst thing that'll befall webmasters is to see the "less desired" version of a page shown in our index.[/qoute]

In other words, you may not rank as high with duplicated content.

Here's my point. If you have two pages on your site with SOME duplicated content, Google will choose one page over the other to rank better. So if the content IS infact your own, there is definatly no worry. That's all I'm trying to say.
