What is SEO Exactly?
Hello,
Everyone keeps talking about oh my site is so Seo friendly and stuff.
But what exactly does SEO stand for (i know it means search engine optimization).
But excatly which search engine is been talked about? Yahoo, google, ask, msn etc etc. There are so many search engines you make site optimzed for one it might not be optimized for the other.
So does SEO literally mean for only Google optimization ?

Well, depends who do you ask. Some people will say that only Google brings traffic, I would say that it is wise to rank well in all major search engines.
Yahoo still loves a lot of content and Google relies mostls on links so if you work on these two you will get a good result on every other engine, at least you should be getting
p.l.u.r.

It DOES depend who you ask.
Heres one of my favorite SEO guides...
How to do SEO by yourself
maybe this will shed some light for you on what SEO really means.

SEO-Search engine optimization (SEO) as a subset of search engine marketing seeks to improve the number and quality of visitors to a web site from "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. The quality of visitor traffic can be measured by how often a visitor using a specific keyword leads to a desired conversion action, such as making a purchase or requesting further information. It all depends on how you think...

Search engine optimization has been generally used to refer a lot of things, especially search engine marketing, which in my opinion is quite different.
SEO can help bring visitors to a site, but that doesn't translate into a sell. Search engine marketing is more on converting visitors to customers or more on selling.

Oh.
@webfu : It's simpler than being potty trained . but didnt knew that italized words had more emphasis on rankings and seoing.
And does SEO necessarily mean higher pagerank ?
Plus is it better to have subdomain for a folder on site or use subfolder.
For example :
http://www.directory.a1whs.com is better or http://www.a1whs.com/directory
Do note the PR difference too , which i cannot figure out.
Plus does domain name also effect seoing?

Couldn't get any more easier than that. If you mean HOW to do SEO then it might take some reading and practicing.
Thank you

That is a good definition.
Angelus - I wouldn't agree with those other people that say only Google brings traffic. I get plenty of traffic - and customers - from MSN and Yahoo.

SEO is search engine optimization:
It is a method in which webmasters do to market their websites faster by just increasing their site's keyword and URL popularity in search engines.

So my next question is , do soeing for one specific search engine mean site is seoed for other search engines too, cause i heard that yahoo and google have different seoing methods.
For example yahoo likes different titles and meta desc. for different pages on site, but google doesnt mind much though. Or is that just a myth?

there saying only google does SEO, which might be true, im not sure. If you're site gets alot of clicks from google it will automatically bring up your sites rankings on other search engines.

Hmmm, I think so, but if I were you, try to concentrate first in one major SE first, especially Google, then after that, do it to other SEs

Yes, I think I've heard it before that SEs have different methods. But what I do is I focus on the major search engines. Search engine, actually (without the s). I focus more on google since it's the largest SE.

I rarely hear anyone say anything like
"this will help you on google but not Yahoo"
there shouldnt be anything that you do for google that will hurt the others besides maybe size of the page
Im sure theres differences in how every search engine weighs factors that determine rankings

seo is all about link building. well, atleast 80% getting links and 20% is one-page optimization.

hmmm is it really that drastic?
I mean shouldnt title, description and page content come first because thats how you decide on the phrases people will be finding your site with?

Depends on the search term. On highly competitive search terms, it's more like 99% links, 1% on-page.
