IMO, its not really on SEO aspect that you will benefit with press release submission...

well yeah, maybe a little... maybe for inbound links or something... but i think its more on the advertising side.. you know... advertising your product and service to gain more visitors on your site... and to increase your sales...

you can get inboud links from it and also you can update people of the new things in your business. as gurlalien said, it's for advertising sake.

Ok thanks for the information,

Are these press releases crawled by search engine bots and if so then what do they like in pree releases considering that they are meant for advertising one's products and services?

I agree 100% with you. I would like to add one thing that...this is traffic ultimately one need and I have read somewhere (I think some newsletter) that if a site get high traffic it is more valued in search engines eye and place it at higher rank. I may be wrong....but It seems to be logical to me.

Press release is more of marketing part and less of seo.

IMO...

press release is a vulgar way to advertise your site, products, and/or services.

articles, on the other hand, is an informative way to help other people with tips, advices, and stories... you can also advertise here but not in the content of your article. maybe on the resource box...
