what exactly is a press release?? well i know what a press release per say is, but can it just be anything, like, today, calisonder hit 40 000 posts on v7n.com...

what kind of info do you release,

Well it depends what you want your press release to do. Do you want to attract customers, tell your customers of a new product service, do you want to add validity to your product or service? So you have to have a purpose for your press release. Next you must choose to whom to send it to... targeting new customers, old customers, repeat customers, people within your field.

Like my last company I worked for.. I used to make press releases for the company. We sent it to either everyone on our mailing list, or certain types of groups.. depending what the "news" was. A press release is either usually news or updates with either a product/service or with the company itself.

It can be, I mean, that is an internet press release. But, a press release is generally...well, Wikipedia puts it best I suppose:

"A written or recorded communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something claimed as having news value. Typically, it is mailed, faxed, or e-mailed to assignment editors at newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations, and/or television networks."

Press releases are typically submitted by the public relations department of a company or organization. But, the internet has obviously changed all that. Anyone can submit a press release now.

Ya, anyone could technically make a press release for just about anything. But the point would be lost, and it would be meaningless. A press release is news or updates. Like in my last company we would make releases for changes in law that effected our company/customers, or releases that showed the results of one of our findings from our research facility. It is supposed to be informative, but from a company perspective it is supposed to fuel validity in the product or obtain/retain customers.
